Sheffield United will be desperately disappointed that they failed to secure an instant promotion back into the Premier League last season as they finished third in the Championship and were beaten in the play-off final at Wembley despite leading with only 15 minutes remaining.

Their points tally of 90, which included a two point deduction, equalled the record for the EFL’s highest points tally without earning promotion, which also resulted in Chris Wilder’s departure from his second spell at the football club as manager.

Saturday’s evening kick off will be Ruben Selles’ first game in the Bramall Lane dugout since taking over as Wilder’s replacement having rescued Hull from relegation last season.

The Blades have lost a number of key players in the transfer window, notably Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic who have moved to Wolfsburg and Feyenoord respectively, while Kieffer Moore has also left the club, as have all seven of the players they had on loan last season from the Premier League.

Bristol City enjoyed their highest league finish in 17 years last season, clinching a play-off spot on the final day of the season, only to be on the receiving end of a record 6-0 aggregate defeat to the Blades in the semi final.

The Robins’ pre-season preparations have been hampered by their manager, Liam Manning, having been poached by Norwich, with Austrian boss Gerhard Struber having taken over the hot seat at Ashton Gate.

It’s been a relatively quiet period for transfers in south Bristol, with four new signings, two on frees and one on loan, though notably none of their star players from last season have departed, excluding 35–year-old striker Nahki Wells, who wasn’t offered a new contract.

The West Country side have had a largely successful pre season on the pitch, losing only one of their six matches, away at Bournemouth, closing out the campaign with a 4-0 home win against a Real Valladolid side who were competing in the Spanish top flight last season.
