Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been reinstated as Barcelona’s captain – hours after putting out a statement following his shock axing.

The Germany No.1 had been stripped of being the Spanish side’s skipper to leave him facing an uncertain future in Catalonia.

The conflict originally stemmed over Ter Stegen announcing the length of his lay-off, a timeframe which wouldn’t allow the club to take his salary off LaLiga’s books and allow them to register other players.

And after reportedly refusing to sign a document about his injury which meant it couldn’t be sent to the league, Barca responded by removing him as captain.

But they have now stated the player has signed the relevant document, before insisting he is once again their captain.

They said: “The club announces that the player Marc-André ter Stegen has signed the authorisation necessary for the Club to send La Liga the medical report relating to his surgery.

“The disciplinary case has been closed and the player is captain of the first team once again with immediate effect.”

What has Ter Stegen said?

Just hours before Barca’s statement, Ter Stegen took to social media to issue a lengthy 355-word statement.

“These past few months have been particularly difficult for me, both physically and personally,” he began.

“Like any player, after suffering an injury, my sole priority has always been to return to the pitch as soon as possible, motivated only by the desire to help the team and do what I love most: compete.

“In recent weeks, many things have been said about me – some of them entirely unfounded.

“Therefore, I feel it is necessary to express my version of events respectfully, yet clearly.

Barcelona had announced his removal as captain, before reinstating him

“The decision to undergo surgery was made after consultation with medical professionals and fully approved by the Club, and always with the intention of prioritising my health and long-term sporting career which of course are fully aligned with those of FCB to have myself available on the pitch as soon as possible to keep winning trophies.

“Moreover, I announced publicly the minimum recovery timing that I shall need after that, which had been communicated to me by most reputed experts and always in coordination with the Club.

“I would also like to clarify – in light of certain speculation – that all of the Club’s signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery, and therefore, at no point could I consider that my unfortunate circumstances with the new surgery I had to undergo would be necessary for the registration of other colleagues whom I greatly respect and look forward to share locker room with for many seasons.

“Any alternative interpretation seems both unfair and inaccurate to me.

“Throughout my career, I have always tried to conduct myself with professionalism, respect, and commitment towards the Badges I have represented.

“I have a deep affection for FC Barcelona, this city, and its supporters, who have stood by me for so many years. My commitment to these colours remains absolute.

“I understand that difficult moments can generate tension, but I trust that, through dialogue and responsibility, we can resolve this situation constructively.

“I am fully willing to collaborate with the Club’s management to resolve this matter and to provide the requested authorisation.

“A lot may have changed, but one thing never will: I love you, Culers!”
