Leicester head into their opening game of new season as overwhelming favourites for victory at home against a Sheffield Wednesday going through some serious struggle off the pitch.

The Foxes are now back in the Championship after spending just one season in the Premier League last season, being relegated with just 25 points to their name, seven of which came in their last four games when they were already relegated.

Former QPR manager Marti Cifuentes has been announced as the new man in the King Power dugout, and the Spaniard has enjoyed success in his pre-season friendlies so far, winning five of his six side’s six matches, including a 2-0 win over Fiorentina last weekend.

The Leicestershire side have made only one new addition to their squad in the transfer window, signing 38-year-old goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, with club legend Jamie Vardy being the most notable departure for the club, along with Conor Coady and Facundo Buonanotte returning back to Brighton from his loan spell.

There was a genuine worry that this fixture wouldn’t even take place due to the current situation ongoing behind the scenes at Sheffield Wednesday, with the club currently experiencing severe financial crisis and uncertainty surrounding its ownership and ability to operate effectively.

The club have repeated failed to pay players and staff their wages in recent months and reportedly facing unpaid tax bills of over £2m, and have been placed under a three-window transfer embargo, which, combined with 13 departures this summer, leaves them with only 16 senior players heading into the new season.

Danny Rohl has also left his position of manager in the off-season, while the large North Stand at their home stadium of Hillsborough has also been closed by the city council due to concerns of it structural integrity, all of which leading towards Owls’ away fans staging a protest at this weekend’s game in Leicester.

The Yorkshire side are odds on favourites for relegation out of the Championship heading into the new campaign, with the club’s pre-season preparations hugely hampered by their off pitch struggles, including last weekend’s friendly with Burnley being cancelled due to players not having been paid.

Leicester are unbeaten in their last three matches against Sheffield Wednesday, including wins in each of their last two meetings at the King Power Stadium, where the Owls haven’t won in 12 years.
