Tommy Fleetwood was helped by an unexpected source at the BMW Championship.

The Englishman made a flying start to his final round at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland on Sunday.

Having started the day at seven-under, Fleetwood birdied the par four second hole to climb up the leaderboard.

However, it had looked like he would have to settle for par as his putt stopped agonisingly short of the hole.

His effort rested on the lip of the cup before finally dropping in as Fleetwood approached the ball.

The moment was met with cheers from the crowd surrounding the green as the 34-year-old let out a wry smile.

Replays showed he was given a helping hand by a fly, though.

The insect had been on the ball as it stopped before moving to the other side of the ball, prompting it to rotate and fall into the cup.

Dame Laura Davies spotted the fly on commentary for Sky Sports before being proven right by the replay.

The four-time major winner said: “There he comes and he goes, ‘no, I’m not having this, I’m going to wander over the equator’. And in we go, thank you very much.”

Fleetwood’s early birdie saw him move to eight-under-par for the week and was the first of three during his final round.

Although he dropped a shot on the fifth hole, he was able to end the day in a tie for fifth.

Fleetwood’s prize money

In doing so, he heads into next weekend’s Tour Championship fifth in the FedEx Cup rankings.

As a result, he will scoop a bonus of $1.45million (£1.07m) in addition to his $728,750 (£538,000) in prize money from the BMW Championship.

It followed a tied-third place finish at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship for Fleetwood.

The world no.13 surrendered a 54-hole lead to end the event one shot behind Justin Rose and JJ Spaun.

Rose went on to beat the US Open champion in a play-off to clinch victory.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood now has 30 top five finishes despite not winning a PGA Tour event.

However, he has already qualified for next month’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

Fleetwood joins Rose and Rory McIlroy as automatic qualifiers for Team Europe.

The six automatic berths will be finalised on August 24 following the British Masters.

Team USA’s automatic picks are confirmed at the end of the BMW Championship.
