Golf fans, doff your cap in the direction of Justin Rose.

The English star showed all of his composure and poise to hold his nerve and beat J.J. Spaun in a thrilling play-off at the FedEx St Jude Championship on Sunday.

It was Rose’s first PGA Tour title in over two years and the 12th in his career as he overcame the American on a third sudden-death hole at TPC Southwind.

Aside from the stunning victory which netted him a cool $3.6million (£2.6m), Rose’s win also ensured fans would be treated to a blockbuster pairing for the upcoming BMW Championship.

That pairing is none other than Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, the two best golfers in the world.

Pairings for the tournament are decided by the FedExCup standings, with points awarded for performances throughout the season at various FedExCup events.

How are pairings for the BMW Championship decided?

The number of points awarded vary depending on the competitions, with 2,000 given to the winners of the first two FedExCup Playoffs tournaments.

One of those was the St Jude Championship, meaning Rose improved his season tally from 1,220 to 3,220.

Rose also climbed from 25th in the rankings up to fourth as a result of his victory in Memphis.

However, had Spaun won the play-off, fans would have been robbed of a Scheffler and McIlroy pairing.

That’s because Spaun went into the St Jude Championship sitting 8th in the FedExCup Standings with 2,144 points.

If he won, Spaun would have had 4,144 points to his name.

It would have bumped McIlroy, who sits second in the standings and did not play in Memphis, down to third as he has 3,444 points.

As for Scheffler, he had nothing to worry about as he sits atop the leaderboard with 5,456 points.

How have McIlroy and Scheffler performed this season?

McIlroy and Scheffler earned their spots at the pointy end of the FedExCup Standings having collectively won three of the four majors this season.

The Northern Irishman finally joined the elusive club of career grand slam winners when he triumphed at The Masters in April.

McIlroy overcame Rose and was visibly emotional upon sinking the winning putt given it was the one major he had not won yet.

Scheffler, meanwhile, won the PGA Championship and the Open Championship to take his career tally of majors to four.

It leaves the U.S. Open as the last major remaining for the 28-year-old, with his best finish being T2 in 2022.

With no more majors on the calendar this year, McIlroy and Scheffler can divert their full attention to the BMW Championship, which tees off on August 14.

Aside from glory and FedExCup standings points, the victor at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland will net a tidy $3.6m (£2.6m), while the runner-up takes home $2.16m (£1.59m).
