Princess Anne celebrated her upcoming 75th birthday with a royal portrait — and while she looks stunning, her hair change is turning heads.
In the photograph, released by Buckingham Palace on Friday, August 8, the princess royal, 74, smiled for the cameras while standing beside her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.
Anne, who turns 75 on Friday, August 15, traded out her iconic voluminous bouffant hairstyle in the portrait for an elegant, twisted bun updo. She wore a diamond Festoon Tiara that sat perfectly atop her head and was tucked into the twist of her hair. (Anne’s tiara was a gift from the Worldwide Shipping Group in 1973 after christening one of their ships when she turned 23.)
The subtle hair switch was noticeable to fans of the princess, as the royal has been rocking a bouffant since the 1980s.

In addition to her show-stopping hair update, Anne stunned in the photograph wearing an ivory gown with lace embellishments on the bodice and skirt. She covered her arms with a cropped jacket and donned elbow-high gloves to match.
The only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and her late husband, Prince Philip, sparkled even more thanks to a diamond necklace and set of earrings. Anne finished off the elegant ensemble by adding a bright blue sash with a broach at its center.

The portrait was taken by Chris Jackson ahead of the State Banquet hosted at Windsor Castle for the President of the French Republic last month. Both Anne and her spouse, 70, were dressed up for the occasion.
While Anne wore a glamorous gown, Tim donned a black tuxedo with red cuffs and detailing on the lapel. He sported several medals of honor for the occasion.
Anne has been a central figure for the British Royal Family from the moment she was born in 1950. Over the years, her style has remained somewhat constant.

She first wore her copper hair down and back in 1970 when she was 19 years old, placing her tiara on top of the slightly teased ‘do. That was her go-to hairstyle for a few years, with a bouncy curls style thrown in every now and then for a change-up.
Anne debuted her signature bouffant in 1973 and the rest is history — especially since she revealed in the 2020 documentary Princess Royal: Anne at 70 that it only takes her mere minutes to achieve her look.
Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence's Relationship Timeline
“Actually, I read an article the other day about Netflix and The Crown, but the actress was talking about how long it took them to do their hair like I did,” Anne said in the film, noting that Erin Doherty, who played the teen version of the princess on the series, once revealed it took the show stylist hours to complete her signature look on camera.
Anne was perplexed by that, saying, “And I’m thinking, ‘How could you possibly take that long?’ I mean, it takes me 10 or 15 minutes.”
While Anne did opt for a twisted bun last month — and in her birthday portrait — she went right back to the bouffant while accepting an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Huddersfield on July 16.
