The Louisville football coaching staff had two years of continuity before experiencing a shakeup this offseason.
The Cardinals have reportedly lost their fourth position coach after offensive line Richard Owens left Louisville to become Alabama's tight ends coach. The former tight end played for Louisville (2004-09) and made his return to his alma mater as part of Jeff Brohm's coaching staff in 2022. He'd previously been the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Georgia Southern.
During his three seasons coaching at his alma mater, Owens helped to produced seven All-ACC offensive linemen with the 2024 offensive line finishing 14th in fewest sacks allowed and 16th in fewest tackles for loss allowed.
Prior to Owens' departure, UofL had also lost tight ends coach Ryan Wallace, defensive coordinator and safeties coach Ron English and defensive line coach Mark Hagen. Paul Petrino was brought in to work with the tight ends while cornerbacks coach Steve Ellis and Mark Ivey, who moved from linebackers to defensive line coach, were named the team's co-defensive coordinators. Adam Mueller and Brandon Sharp were elevated to the linebackers and safeties coaches, respectively.
