After the first half of play, it looked like FC Köln could prove to be another unexpected thorn in the side of a high-flying Bayern Munich side. After a highly energetic display, the Billy Goats bagged the first goal of the game through Linton Maina. However, Bayern were quick to steady the ship, shortly responding with a goal of their own from Serge Gnabry.
Köln head coach, Lukas Kwasniok, was impressed with his side’s performance, particularly highlighting his side’s impressive work ethic in the first half.
“We had a high level of willingness to run,” explained the 44-year-old manager (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The problem is, the Bayern are also very hardworking. We were already able to stress them out in parts in the cup, we were able to build on that today. In the first half, we ran three kilometers more.”
The second half proved to be a tightly contested affair. Köln looked dangerous on the counterattack, but according to Kwasniok, Bayern’s star power got them over the line.
“We have plugged many holes, Tom Krauß stands out there. But Bayern with their individual quality have decided the game. Not many would have scored the 1:1. And what Harry Kane does is almost already extraterrestrial.”
Bayern Munich’s 3-1 victory against FC Köln is perhaps the perfect example of why Vincent Kompany’s side is so difficult to play against. A blend of work ethic and star power creates a mixture that remains unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season.
Die Roten will be looking to keep their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga intact as they prepare to take on an RB Leipzig side eager for revenge after their 6-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
