ARLINGTON, Texas Nov. 28 — The No. 45 Prosper [TX] Eagles refused to make it easy on the No. 6/SN No. 6 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons Friday night here at Choctaw Stadium.

But these Dragons showed they've got plenty of fire in their bellies to trade blows with the heavyweights of the Texas UIL Class 6A Division II bracket. In a game delayed more than four hours due to inclement weather in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Southlake Carroll ultimately outlasted the Eagles, 49-31, to advance to the state quarterfinals.

Southlake Carroll's closest game prior to Friday night came in a 35-7 romp past the Hebron [Carrollton, TX] Hawks back on September 5, and they had not yielded more than the 28 they allowed the Keller [TX] Indians in a 63-28 blowout on October 3. But after taking an early 14-0 lead, the Dragons suddenly found themselves in a bit of a shootout starting in the second quarter, as the Eagles pulled to within four on two occasions at 14-10 and 21-17.

It was the first time Southlake Carroll had been seriously challenged all year, but they showed why they are considered the top team in Texas, answering each of Prosper's blows with one of their own. Then after scoring with 22 seconds left to play in the first half to go up 28-17, the Dragons finally created some separation after receiving the ball first in the second half to go up 35-17.

From there, it was a back-and-forth affair again as Prosper would score to pull within 11 on two more occasions only to see Southlake Carroll answer with a score of its own each time. Ultimately, the Dragons (13-0) had the firepower to outlast the Eagles, and they'll face the Guyer [Denton, TX] Wildcats next week. Prosper's season, meanwhile, is over at 11-2 with their only other loss coming to the Allen [TX] Eagles, the No. 2 team in Texas and the favorite to win a state championship in the Class 6A Division I bracket.
