Peyton Bowen's excellent weekend earned him recognition even beyond Oklahoma, it turns out.
The Sooners' junior safety picked up the Jim Thorpe Award National Defensive Back of the Week honors Tuesday following OU's 17-6 win over Missouri. Bowen logged four tackles and a pass break-up, plus his blocked field goal in the second quarter led to OU's first touchdown on the Sooners' ensuring drive.
The award marked the second straight week a Bowen brother won the award. Peyton's younger brother Eli Bowen won last week after a key interception in Oklahoma's upset win over Alabama. The Sooners lofted themselves into the College Football Playoff picture with that win, then held on to it with Saturday's victory over the Tigers.
Peyton Bowen ranks seventh on the team with 37 tackles while also registering six pass break-ups and an interception. OU ranks 11th in FBS in total defense and sixth in FBS in scoring defense.
Oklahoma will almost certainly clinch a spot in the CFP with a win in Saturday's season-finale against LSU. Kickoff from Norman is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
