Union Saint-Gilloise v Newcastle prediction
Newcastle will be desperate to get back to winning ways on Wednesday evening in their early kick-off Champions League game against Union Saint-Gilloise.
Eddie Howe’s side will still be hurting from their agonising 2-1 defeat at home against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, having led the match heading into the 84th minute, conceding the winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time at the end of the game.
The defeat means the Magpies have now win one of their last four matches in all competitions and just two of their eight matches all season, and just six points from six league games this season leaves Howe’s men down in 15th place, just two points above the drop zone.
The Tyneside club will be eager to get some points on the board in the Champions League in Brussels on Wednesday evening having lost 2-1 at home to Spanish champions Barcelona in their opening game of their European campaign a fortnight ago.
Wednesday’s match will be a huge occasion for their Belgian opponents, who will be playing their first ever home game at this stage of the Champions League, but will be forced to play it at the home stadium of their main rivals, Anderlecht.
Les Unionistes‘ usual home, the Joseph Marien Stadium, holds less than 10,000 people and doesn’t meet UEFA requirements, so are having to play their European home games two miles down the road at the home of Anderlecht.
Last season saw Union Saint-Gilloise crowned champions of Belgium for the first time in 90 years, in their manager, former West Brom and Brighton left back, Sebastien Pocognoli’s first season managing in senior football.
Pocognoli’s side head into Wednesday’s clash against Premier League opposition on the back of a 10 match unbeaten run, of which they’ve won eight, including each of their last five, and boast a six point lead at the top of the Jupiler Pro League, just nine games into the campaign.
The club made history a fortnight ago with their first ever Champions League league phase game, in which they earned a shock 3-1 away win at PSV in the neighbouring Netherlands, cementing a statement of intent in Europe this season.
It will be a momentous occasion for Union Saint-Gilloise playing their first ‘home’ game in the league phase of the Champions League, but Newcastle will be determined for victory after defeat in their tournament opener and the strength of their squad should see them edge the tie – I think a 2-1 away win seems most likely.
Union Saint-Gilloise v Newcastle betting tips
Woltemade to make mark on Magpies win
Newcastle’s new striker scored his second goal in three games for his new club in Sunday’s defeat against Newcastle, opening the scoring with a powerful header, and is expected to be involved from the off once again tonight.
- Nick Woltemade to score at 15/8 with bet365
Magpies get off the mark in Europe
Newcastle will be determined to win their first points of their European campaign on Wednesday and avoid losing their opening two games of this season’s Champions League following their defeat against Barcelona.
Their Belgian opponents are in good form but will be playing in conditions slightly alien to them due to their home stadium not meeting UEFA requirements, and the Magpies may be able to capitalise on that and return home with victory under their belt.
- Newcastle to win and both teams to score at 11/4 with bet365
