Arsenal will seek to take another step towards securing a place in the top eight of the Champions League when they host Olympiacos on Wednesday.

The Gunners will be full of confidence after their impressive 2-1 win over Newcastle on Sunday. They will also be buoyed by the Greek’s poor record on the road in Europe.

Arsenal vs Olympiacos predictions

Despite sitting second in the Premier League with 13 points from six matches, there still appears to be plenty of room for improvement for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

That may seem a touch harsh. They did, afterall, beat Newcastle 2-1 at St. James’ Park last Sunday. Goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel clinched a crucial comeback win.

However, it does feel like this Arsenal team has far more to give. And there is a general feeling that Arteta has been holding the team back, with the accusation being that he is playing with the handbrake on at times.

In Mikel Arteta’s defence, the Gunners have had a tough start to the season. Already, he has had to navigate his team past Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle on the road, along with Manchester City at the Emirates.

Yet, despite coming through that tricky spell just two points off the top of the table, Arteta has come under fire at times for his slightly negative tactics.

As well as having a strong start in the Premier League, the Gunners have also begun the Champions League well.

Again employing a cautious approach, but with no complaints this time as it worked, Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners away to Athletic Club at San Mamés in impressive fashion.

Arteta will no doubt want to wrap up qualification from the group stage as soon as possible. And with a match against Olympiacos looking like it’s there for the taking, we can expect to see the handbrake off again on Wednesday.

Olympiacos sit top of the Greek Super League with 13 points from five matches. A vastly superior goal difference is all that currently separates them from second place AEK Athens.

The Greeks warmed up for the match against the Gunners with a 3-2 win over Levadiakos on Saturday. Like Arsenal, they also needed a late winner to seal the victory. Chiquinho was the hero, firing home the winning strike on 96 minutes.

The win means that José Luis Mendilibar’s team have won five and drawn two in all competitions this season.

However, in Europe their record is nowhere near as strong.

The Greeks opened up with a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Pafos. And this, with the European minnows playing over an hour with just ten men.

Despite 70 percent possession and 18 attempts at goal, José Luis Mendilibar’s team could only manage three on target. The visitors managed six attempts with just one on target.

Further scrutiny of their European record shows that Olympiacos are on skid of ten successive away losses in the group stages of the Champions League.

It’s difficult to see that run ending at the Emirates.

Arsenal vs Olympiacos betting tips

This may sound hard to believe in the current climate, but Olympiacos have won their last three matches away at Arsenal. In slightly different eras, the wins came between 2015 and 2021, with one in the Champions League and two in the Europa League. A different outcome is likely this time. Our Arsenal vs Olympiacos match tips follow:

A comfortable night for the Gunners

Given the statistics and the apparent gulf in class, Arsenal shouldn’t have too many problems winning this.

Mikel Arteta’s team have had a tough run of fixtures lately. They have also suffered more injury setbacks than they might have expected, so we don’t expect to see them going full throttle against the Greeks.

A Gunners win, doing just enough is the most likely outcome. This brings under 3.5 goals into play and makes a wager on Arsenal to win more worthwhile.

For more security, you can play safe and back Arsenal to win and under 4.5 goals at 4/7. But we are going with the better odds.

⚽ Bet on Arsenal to win and under 3.5 goals at 11/10 with Sky Bet ⚽

Fortress Gunners

Arsenal have conceded just one goal at the Emirates in three matches this season. That was scored by who else, goal machine Erling Haaland.

In total, the Gunners have conceded just three goals in seven matches in all competitions home and away.

One was scored by the aforementioned Haaland, another was Dominik Szoboszlai’s unstoppable free kick for Liverpool, and the third was Nick Woltemade’s goal for Newcastle at the weekend.

The Gunners have the joint-best defense in the Premier League. Don’t be shocked if they keep a clean sheet against the Greeks.

Swede on the Scoresheet

This is the sort of fixture that has a Viktor Gyökeres goal written all over it. At 8/13, some might prefer adding him to a bet builder rather than backing him as a single.

The Swede has faced some unfair criticism in the Premier League, but he probably hasn’t done much wrong. Arsenal’s style hasn’t always helped, and their tough early-season fixtures haven’t made things any easier.

A game against weaker opposition suits him perfectly. He scored a brace against Leeds in a similar fixture and looks set to hit the scoresheet against the Greeks.
