The standout fixture of Champions League matchday two sees Barcelona face Paris Saint-Germain. This has the makings of a classic, as Hansi Flick’s team attempt to shoot down the defending champions.

Will Barcelona’s home advantage help them to pick up all three points, or will PSG reassert their credentials in their first away game of this European campaign?

Barcelona vs PSG predictions

At one point last season it looked like these two teams were destined to meet in the Champions League final.

Paris Saint-Germain held up their end of the bargain. After some iffy showings in the league phase, PSG came alive in the knockout rounds to reach the tournament showpiece.

Barcelona were the favourites to get the better of Inter in the semi-finals. They drew the first leg 3-3 at home, then found themselves 3-2 up in the return fixture heading into second-half stoppage time.

Inter did not give up, though. Francesco Acerbi equalised with one of the last kicks of regulation time, then Davide Frattesi won the tie for the Italian outfit in extra time.

It was hard to begrudge Inter their victory, but Barcelona would surely have given PSG a better game in the final. Simone Inzaghi’s side were no match for the Parisians, suffering a 5-0 defeat in Munich.

Barcelona are joint-favourites to lift the trophy this year, level with Arsenal, Liverpool and PSG at 6/1.

If they are to go all the way, the Blaugrana will need to find a better balance between attack and defence. Hansi Flick’s side played some sensational football last season, but a dose of pragmatism against Inter would have got them over the line.

Flick’s men have started the season brightly. They have amassed 19 points from a possible 21 in La Liga to take top spot after seven games.

Barcelona also successfully negotiated a potentially tricky encounter on matchday one of the Champions League, beating Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park.

PSG were also triumphant in their first European outing, beginning the defence of their crown with a 4-0 thumping of Atalanta.

However, Luis Enrique’s charges subsequently lost 1-0 to Marseille in Ligue 1, and while they beat Auxerre 2-0 at the weekend, PSG have lost some key players to injury in recent weeks.

Ousmane Dembele remains sidelined, so the Ballon d’Or winner will play no part against his former club. PSG have also been unable to call upon the services of Desire Doue, Joao Neves, Fabian Ruiz and Marquinhos recently, while Vitinha and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia picked up injuries in the defeat of Auxerre.

The team news makes for much better reading for Barcelona fans with Lamine Yamal fit again, although Raphinha has taken the youngster’s place on the treatment table.

Barcelona vs PSG betting tips

Barcelona host PSG in a clash of the titans on matchday two of the Champions League.

Barcelona should come out on top

It is a shame for PSG and neutrals alike that the defending champions will be so far away from full strength on Wednesday.

There is hope among the fan base that at least one of Vitinha, Neves or Ruiz will be fit enough to start, although that is far from certain.

Even if PSG are able to recover one of their first-choice midfielders, their patched-up side will struggle to avoid defeat by Barcelona.

Flick’s men are in fine form at the start of 2025/26 and they also have home advantage in their favour against PSG.

Barcelona should therefore come out on top in front of their own supporters.

Goals in store on Wednesday

Even with so many players unavailable, PSG will still carry a threat in the final third with a probable front three of Ibrahim Mbaye, Goncalo Ramos and Bradley Barcola.

Barcelona have conceded in five of their eight matches in all competitions, so they are not invulnerable defensively.

Yet despite their shortcomings at the back, Barca tend to outscore their opponents. That produces high-scoring games: three of their seven league matches in 2025/26 have featured four goals or more.

Luis Enrique may instruct his side to sit deeper than usual here, but we still anticipate plenty of entertainment in Catalonia.

Lewandowski still the man for Barcelona

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi rank first and second in the all-time Champions League goal charts.

Next on the list is Robert Lewandowski, who is the only other player to have reached treble figures.

The Poland international has found the back of the net 105 times in this competition, but he is still hungry for more.

While Lewandowski is not as complete as he once was, he remains lethal in and around the penalty area.

The experienced centre-forward can get his name on the scoresheet when Barcelona lock horns with PSG this week.
