Neither Juventus nor Borussia Dortmund is among the favourites to win the Champions League this season, but a run to the latter stages is possible for both teams – not least because they have started well in 2025/26.

Juventus have a 100 percent record at the beginning of the Serie A campaign, while Dortmund have collected seven points from nine. Who wins this one?

Juventus vs Borussia Dortmund predictions

In 1997 these two teams contested the Champions League final. Borussia Dortmund were the victors that night, as a brace from Karl-Heinz Riedle inspired them to a 3-1 victory over Juventus.

Both sides have been back to the tournament showpiece since then. Dortmund were runners-up to Bayern Munich in 2013 and then again to Real Madrid in 2024.

Juventus have endured even more near-misses. They again finished second in 1998, on that occasion to Real Madrid, before suffering defeat in the finals of 2003 (AC Milan), 2015 (Barcelona) and 2017 (Madrid again).

Could either side reach the showpiece this season? It is not impossible. Neither Juventus nor Dortmund is among the favourites to go all the way. But both belong to the group of dark horses who, with a bit of good fortune, could be contenders.

Juve have made a strong start to the domestic campaign and that will give them confidence as the Champions League gets under way.

A 4-3 victory over Inter in a thrilling edition of the Derby d’Italia on Saturday kept the Bianconeri in second place in Serie A. Like Napoli, the defending champions, they boast a 100 percent record after three rounds of fixtures.

Dortmund have not been quite as good in the Bundesliga, but a return of seven points from the first nine available represents a solid start.

Of course, toppling Bayern Munich is a tall order, but Dortmund should at least improve on last season’s fourth-place finish.

As for Juve, their fans are daring to dream of a first scudetto since 2019/20. It is early days, of course, but Igor Tudor has restored belief to the Allianz Stadium.

Given Juventus’s domestic dominance (they are by far the most successful side in Italian football history with 36 titles to their name), the Turin-based outfit have underachieved in Europe.

Juve have only ever won two Champions Leagues – the same number as Nottingham Forest – and their last success in this tournament came in the mid-1980s. They are long overdue a continental triumph.

Juventus are pretty much at full strength for Tuesday’s contest, but Dortmund remain without Emre Can, Niklas Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck.

That leaves them with a patched-up defensive unit on matchday one of the Champions League, although BVB have kept back-to-back clean sheets domestically ahead of their trip to Italy.

Juventus vs Borussia Dortmund betting tips

Juventus and Borussia Dortmund will both be seeking a win on the opening night of the Champions League.

Juventus can edge Tuesday’s encounter

There is unlikely to be much between these two teams on Tuesday. A win for either team would not be a surprise, and many will be tempted by the draw.

There are a few factors in Juventus’s favour, though. Taking everything into account, they have had the more impressive start to the season. That 4-3 defeat of Inter was a real statement of intent.

Secondly, Juventus have home advantage behind them. Borussia Dortmund are yet to fully shed their reputation for flakiness on the road.

Most significant of all is Dortmund’s weakened backline. True, that did not cost them against Union Berlin or Heidenheim, but Juventus are a much better team than either of those Bundesliga sides.

It promises to be close, but the Bianconeri can edge out Dortmund in this one.

Nothing to separate teams at break

Borussia Dortmund have looked more resilient under Niko Kovac, who turned their season around in March.

Dortmund surged up the standings in the Bundesliga to qualify for the Champions League, having looked almost certain to miss out at one point.

With those defensive absentees, Kovac’s team will aim to soak up pressure and bide their time.

It is a strategy which could frustrate Juventus, at least for a while. If Dortmund got in at the break with the score level, they would probably be happy.

Juve, for their part, will not want to rush things either. Parity at half-time is our second pick on Tuesday.

Hedge your bets with Guirassy wager

It is customary to choose an anytime goalscorer from the predicted winning team, but it is worth hedging your bets by picking Serhou Guirassy.

For starters, it is not entirely clear whether Juventus will go with Dusan Vlahovic or Jonathan David up top. There is no doubt that Guirassy will lead the line at the opposite end.

The Guinea international’s record speaks for itself. No one scored more goals than him in the Champions League last season.

Given his track record and the odds offered on Guirassy finding the back of the net, this feels like a no-brainer.
