Tommy Fleetwood finally claimed his maiden PGA Tour title as ge emerged victorious at the Tour Championship to be crowned 2025 FedEx Cup champion.

The 34-year-old, who recorded six runner-ups and 44 top-10 finishes before winning in America, was classy throughout the four days in Atlanta as he won by three shots.

His nearest rivals were Americans Russell Henley and Patrick Cantlay but Fleetwood held his nerve to par the last three holes and close out an emotional win.

The triumph at East Lake Golf Club sees Fleetwood bank a whopping $10million (£7.4m) as he claims his first PGA Tour title at the 164th attempt.

Southport-born Fleetwood has long been a household name in the sport and was runner-up at the US Open in 2018, but none of his eight professional wins had occurred in America.

Fleetwood started the final round as joint leader and overcame a slight wobble midway through with Cantlay and world no.1 Scottie Scheffler hot on his heels.

But for the first time during a PGA Tour event, Fleetwood showed his composure to claim the victory that he and golf fans have craved.

Reacting to his win, Fleetwood said: “You just keep learning, don’t you? I think this one… there was the Travelers, there was Memphis…

“This wasn’t the most comfortable I’ve been because you start thinking of the others but I’ve had a great attitude throughout it all.

“I was a bit erratic at times but then I found my swing on the 11th and changed my routine…”

Fleetwood added: “I’m proud of what I’ve done before. Whether I’ve won or not I’ve still been proud of my career and where I’ve been so far knowing that I’ve still got a long way to go and a lot to learn.

“This doesn’t change that, really. This is hopefully one win, the first of many to come. You can’t win plenty if you don’t win the first one.

“I’m just so happy that I got it done, I’m happy with my work-ethic and I’ll continue to try and get better and be the best that I can be.

“It makes me a bit emotional. I’m always so lucky with the support that I get.

“I said this last month with the buzz that’s been around me when I’ve been in contention has been amazing.

“To get the support like that is just so special and I don’t want to lose it, everybody knows how grateful I am for it.

“I said we’ll do it together and I feel like we did. I’m so happy for me and everyone who supported me through all this.”

Fleetwood came second at the Travelers Championship in June and squandered a great chance for victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship recently too.

While his nerves must have been jangling on Sunday, a birdie at the second hole represented a fine start and even though it was followed by a bogey three holes later, Fleetwood regained his composure to secure back-to-back birdies before the turn.

The field bunched up around Fleetwood as he produced a bogey to start his back nine but he kept his cool to send down another birdie on the 12th.

A fifth birdie of the round at the 13th once again opened a three-shot gap to Cantlay, who would soon bogey again to leave Fleetwood almost home and dry.

Fleetwood dropped a shot at 15 and despite Corey Conners’ extraordinary eight-under 62, there would be no denying the popular Englishman.

A simple putt for par on the final hole was followed by Fleetwood letting out an enormous roar as he toasted his first PGA Tour win at the 164th time of asking.

He was greeted by his stepson Oscar as well as European Ryder Cup team-mates Shane Lowry and Justin Rose on the final green as he lifted the FedEx Cup trophy.

Tiger Woods was among the first to congratulate Fleetwood, posting on his social media channels: “Your journey is a reminder that hard work, resilience, and heart do pay off. No one deserves it more. Congrats Tommy Fleetwood!”
