Newcastle v Liverpool predictions
The spotlight ahead of the match is on Newcastle’s wantaway striker Alexander Isak, who has openly expressed his desire to join Liverpool. The Swedish forward has been linked with a move to Anfield all summer, but Newcastle’s inability to find a replacement has left him in limbo, and he will not feature on Monday.
Liverpool, favored to win, aim to secure consecutive victories to start the season after a 4-2 triumph over Bournemouth on opening night. Late goals from Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, and Mo Salah clinched the win for Arne Slot’s side after they squandered a 2-0 lead, with the score tied at 2-2 until the 88th minute.
This match kicks off a crucial week for Liverpool in their quest to win consecutive league titles for the first time since 1984, facing a formidable Newcastle side before hosting title rivals Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.
Newcastle are desperate to either sign a new striker or persuade Isak to stay, as their attack lacks a true number nine. In their opening game at Villa Park, Eddie Howe’s side dominated but lacked a clinical edge, with winger Anthony Gordon playing centrally in a 0-0 draw where they deserved more.
The Magpies are eager to perform for their home fans after a challenging summer transfer window that hasn’t met expectations, especially with Champions League football looming.
Newcastle will draw confidence from their last meeting with Liverpool, a 2-1 victory in the League Cup final at Wembley, which ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy and snapped a 17-match winless streak against the Reds.
Newcastle’s striker issues still remain a problem at this early stage in the season, while Liverpool’s side looks much more settled ahead of Monday night’s big clash – a 3-1 away win looking most likely.
Newcastle v Liverpool betting tips
Hugo’s Boss
Newcastle had submitted a bid for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike this summer before the Frenchman opted to join Liverpool instead, and has very much hit the ground running for his new side, bagging goals in each of his opening two appearances in Red.
Opening goals in both the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace and last week’s Premier League opening night victory over Bournemouth has Ekitike in good goalscoring form and will have a point to prove, not only to show that Liverpool don’t need Isak but also against his former potential employers, to show he made the right decision.
- Hugo Ekitike to score first at 11/2 with bet365
Set Liverpool side to triumph against extemporary Geordies
Liverpool, having won the league at a canter last season and having splashed nearly £300m in improving their squad seem a much more settled squad than the Newcastle side who still have questions to answer in their striker department.
The Magpies must sort out the Isak issue and either get him back in the squad or find a suitable replacement as they cannot rely on playing wingers up front and expect to have as a good a season as last term, which resulted in a trophy and a Champions League finish.
However, as good as Liverpool look going forward there do appear to be some defensive holes which Newcastle can target, with the Reds having conceded twice in each of their competitive matches so far this season.
- Liverpool to win and both teams to score at 12/5 with bet365
