Jannik Sinner has pulled out of this week’s US Open mixed doubles.
The world no. 1 retired from his Cincinnati Open final clash against Carlos Alcaraz late on in the first set due to illness.

Sinner was due to play alongside Katerina Siniakova in the mixed doubles ahead of the US Open main singles draw.
However, he won’t feature in his bid to recover after Monday.
Speaking to the crowd after losing, Sinner said: “Usually I start with the opponent but today I have to start with you guys [the crowd].
“I’m super super sorry to disappoint you. From yesterday I didn’t feel great. I thought I would improve during the night. It came up worse.
“I tried to come out and make it at least a small match but I couldn’t handle more. I’m very very sorry for all of you.
“I know some of you on Monday maybe had to work or do something else, so I’m very very sorry.
“Of course Carlos congrats. Another title. Not the way you wanted to win but it’s amazing what kind of season you’re producing.
“You and your whole team are doing amazing. Keep it up. I wish you only all the best for the US Open and the rest of the season.”
Why did Sinner retire?
It was unclear what caused Sinner’s withdrawal, but he was seen reaching down to his stomach during the match.
When the match was finally called off, the announcement cited ‘illness’.

During those closing moments, medics came over to check on the 24-year-old, who could be heard saying: “I’m sorry guys I can’t.
“I tried. I can’t. I feel very bad, I feel so sorry for the fans.”
During his speech the Italian also hinted at the heat being a factor.
“I’m sorry to disappoint but sometimes it’s like this and we have to accept it,” he said.
“It’s been one of the hottest tournaments we have faced, so thank you for all of the support and organisation.”
Bad timing for Sinner
Withdrawal at the Cincinnati Open is far from ideal as the tournament is a prelude to the US Open Grand Slam.
The main draw then starts on Sunday, with Sinner the defending champion in this year’s tournament.
